Some of the extra-activities we did in class can be found in this section. They are classified attending the unit criterium.
Regret – why do we feel this negative emotion? Is it right to live with it, or should we simply get over our mistakes of the past?
Mike Williams speaks to a palliative care nurse who recorded the regrets of the dying, and the man with 50,000 regrets, all entrusted to him by anonymous strangers who have confessed the biggest regrets of their lives on his website.

Revolutionaries: Artificial Intelligence [UPDATED] - (a documentary)
Revolutionaries: Artificial Intelligence [UPDATED] - (a documentary)
Two pioneers in AI discuss their work and describe the way in which machine led intelligence is set to remake our world. Eric Horvitz, managing director of Microsoft Research and Cynthia Breazeal, chief scientist of the Robotics firm Jibo join the BBC’s Rory Cellan Jones to discuss the rewards and challenges of AI with an audience in Silicon Valley.
Maggie Boden is a world authority in the field of artificial intelligence – she even has a robot named in her honour. As research professor of Cognitive Science at the University of Sussex, Maggie has spent a lifetime attempting to answer philosophical questions about the nature of the human mind, but from a computational viewpoint. “Tin cans”, as she sometimes calls computers, are information processing systems, the perfect vehicle, she believes, to help us understand, explore and analyse the mind.
The guests on Hardtalk are people who do much to shape our world. More often than not they are a testament to the talent and potential of the human species. But what if we are living on the cusp of a new era shaped not by mankind but by machines using Artificial Intelligence to build a post-human world. Science fiction? Not according to scientist and philosopher Nick Bostrom who runs the Future of Humanity Institute. Stephen Sackur asks, when truly intelligent machines arrive, what happens to us?
Professor Stephen Hawking warns of the threat to mankind from artificial intelligence. Neil Jacobstein of California's Singularity University, AI expert Ben Medlock of SwiftKey, and the music producer and tech investor Will.i.am give us their take.
Billions of dollars are pouring into the latest investor craze - artificial intelligence. But serious scientists like Stephen Hawking have warned that full AI could spell the end of the human race. How seriously should we take the warnings that ever-smarter computers could turn on us? Our expert witnesses explain the threat, the opportunities and how we might avoid being turned into paperclips.
ACTIVITY: Listening and discussion
- First of all, divide the class into 4 groups that will be in charge of the 4 parts of the podcast. Get them to assess two types of tasks to the members: summarizing and WRITING vocabulary.
- Divide the class into pessimists (against AI) and optimists (pro AI)
- Form pairs where one student is for and the other one against
- Have an open class discussion.
